The Future of 2008

If you could go back in time and tell your younger self anything, what would it be? It’s something we all wish we could do, be it for noble or selfish reasons. But what if all you could talk about were videogames? What then? That’s the question proposed by one of the more interesting GAF threads this weekend and it’s one that I’ve put a bit of thought into.
When it comes to games I’m proud of my background and definitely wouldn’t tell my younger self to avoid any bad games or anything like that. I would most likely warn him of the hype machine and how to manage his money better.I figure I’d better start at writing him a letter.

In an interview today with Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon, my boss asks the question, “When you sat down to design this game, what were your goals? And when did you start working on the game?” His response-
“When Mortal Kombat: Armageddon was completed in 2006, we started working on this having no knowledge of including DC characters.“
Yet, three years ago on July 19, 2005, NeoGAF user habeem4999 baffles everyone by posting the following fact sheet. He was then laughed out of the thread.
We originally thought him to be a prophet, but that’s not the case. This, my friends, is the work of a time lord and I feel that his dark work has only begn.
No commentsStreet Fighter IV gets a facelift

Things have been quite hectic around here as of late and I’ll soon be in a better position to deliver some updates to my blog. The long story short is that I’m finally moving back out (This weekend, actually!) and so all my commuting woes that have kept me away from, well, fun in general, will be going out the window. Until then, check out these two awesome posts that fellow NeoGAF user, MicVlaD, put together to showcase the subtle changes that Street Fighter IV has gone through in the past couple of weeks.
The new shots are on the right-hand side and while the changes are very subtle, they make a huge impression on the overall look. The details are really starting to shine (Honda has nipples now!), the facial expressions (finally) look great and you can see the beginnings of their advanced lighting and filters going into play. After playing the game at GDC (of which I presented five days worth of features) I looked upon the graphics as acceptable. Not terribly great, but acceptable. We’re definitely getting into that “great” territory now. Enjoy!

I remember the good ol’ days of Rock Band when Harmonix would let us know a whole month ahead of time to what tune we were to surrender our wallets. We’ve been flying at the seat of our thrones for the past couple of weeks, finding out what’s next only a few short days before release and that’s if we were lucky. Justin over at NeoGAF spotted a shot in the dark today and one that’s no longer there! Crap! Well, for those who missed it, here’s what’s on the horizon for Rock Band-

Oasis Pack includes songs by Oasis including “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” “Live Forever,” and “Wonderwall”Week of January 29, 2008
Progressive Pack includes “Siva” by Smashing Pumpkins, “Working Man” as made famous by Rush *, and “Ten Speed (Of God’s Blood and Burial)” as made famous by Coheed and Cambria *
Could they have possibly have picked a more obscure Pumpkins song? In other news, Tiff and I discovered the secret to the universe. Why don’t you go swing on a star and find out.
[Update] I was chatting with Chris Grant about this and he pointed out that while the information is gone, it still mentions Oasis right at the top. Classy!
